Searsport, a small coastal town, is
centrally located on mid-coast Maine. Large ships frequently moor behind our Inn
as this is both a fishing town and an active seaport. It is quite a sight to see
a ship all lighted at night, reflecting in the water- awaiting the tug boats to
escort it to the pier, or watching lobster boats checking their traps.
The oldest Marine museum in the state, The
Penobscot Marine Museum with 12 buildings, 9 of which are on the National
Historic Register is located here. The museum houses the largest collection of
Charles & Mary
Buttersworth paintings in the U.S.- along with a wonderful library where folks
from all over the world come to check genealogy.
A town rich in seafaring heritage,
Searsport supplied 10% of the world's sea captains and the many masted schooners
were built here The architecture is beautiful and you will want to see some of
the finest stained glass geometric windows in the U.S. at the "Harbor" church.
Searsport is also the antique capital of
Maine, with oodles of antique stores and outdoor flea markets.
Excellent dining - ranging from exquisite
fine dining on local & imported fare - to the best Thai restaurant in New
England; to a great micro-brewery & pub; an immaculate family restaurant with
some of the best sea food available; to delectable waterfront dining at
Lincolnville Beach; to lobster shack, sub shops and taverns - and the best ice
cream around. (Mainers eat more ice cream than any other state.)
We are but 10 minutes from Belfast, where
you may wander the charming shops and galleries; enjoy various types of boating;
go kayaking or attend a great live theatre - and of course - view the Belfast
Bearfest and have some wondrous food; 25 minutes to Lincolnville Beach to the
fabulou s
Lobster Pound on the water (and visit the grape winery first); or famous Camden.
If you are going to Bangor (55 minutes ) you'll want to stop at the Winterport
Winery - (fantastic fruit wines) or take an hour trip to south to Pemaquid
Point, Rockland & Thomaston, or inland for wondrous Maine nurseries, gardens &
greenhouses, Augusta and more - or go North East to Schoodic Point (the most
beautiful part of Acadia National Park) or to Bar Harbor for a Whale Watch tour
-and a sunset viewing from the top Cadillac Mountain at Acadia National Park.
There is much to see and do and you'll
wish you had allowed more time. That's all right as inevitably - you'll return!
