What is a Virus or Worm?
Briefly, they are strings of computer code designed to
scramble or cause problems with your computer's software.
How do I know if I've got a Virus or Worm?
There are a variety of symptoms, which may include your
computer slowing to a crawl, closing down unexpectedly, or generally
acting in an erratic fashion.
What is a Firewall?
A software program, which when loaded onto your computer "masks" it from
hackers. If you have a Cable or DSL internet connection, which is active
24 hours a day, a firewall is essential.
What is a Hacker?
The typical hacker is an individual who tries to gain remote
access to your computer for malicious or illegal purposes. If you notice
your computer's cursor moving on it's own, or files opening up on their
own, it could be a hacker at work. The best solution is to always turn
off your computer when not in use.
How do I recognize a
Virus?
Virus's are usually sent
via e-mail attachments.
Typically they are sent with enticing subject headings such as
"Important Microsoft Message", "Application Approved", "A Gift for You",
or "I Love You" - anything which may encourage you to open the
attachment. Opening the e-mail will NOT infect your system (this
is simply viewing the text held on a server), it is
opening the attachment within the e-mail that
downloads the virus code onto your computer.
Can I get a virus other than through
e-mail?
Yes, although it is rare. The recent
Sasser worm masked itself as a Microsoft program. If you did not have a
firewall, the worm immediately caused your computer to repeatedly close
down.
How does a virus work?
Viruses take many forms. Some will destroy files, and others such as the
recent "Blaster" virus, will collect
e-mail addresses from your computer, and send copies of itself to other
computers, using those e-mail addresses as the
sending address.
Who sends viruses?
We have tracked the senders of a number of viruses through their IP
address, and found that 90% of them originate in universities and
colleges.
Do reputable companies send out viruses?
No, but it may well appear that they do! Using
popular e-mail programmes such as Outlook, anyone can address an e-mail
as if it came from someone else. If you get an e-mail with a virus
attached, the sender will definitely NOT put his own address on it.
Most
likely, he'll use an address from a legitimate company -
such as Microsoft or Paypal. On several
occasions 1000inns.com has been targeted, and we know of several
innkeepers who have had the same problem (no one is safe).
What it the easiest way not to get a virus /
worm?
There are three things which you can do to stop most virus's from entering your
computer. They are in this order:
1. Do not open attachments
2. Do not
open attachments
3. Do not open attachments.
Unless you are expecting an
attachment from a reputable source, don't open it. Be aware: No
anti-virus program will detect all virus's. You should download upgrades
to your anti-virus on a regular basis to ensure protection against each
new virus.
What do I do if I get a virus?
In most cases, anti-virus software should immediately limit the extent
of the virus, notify you of the infection, and quarantine infected
files. At this point, you can go to the virus scan companies web site,
and follow their procedures for removing the virus from your system.
With Norton, the most popular virus scan manufacturer, you can download
a patch, and run it to totally remove the virus you are infected with.
Depending on your computer this can take from a few minutes to several
hours.
Norton Symantecs virus removal tools are available at the
following address (available for anyone to use free):

Free Virus Scan Software:
We use Anti-Vir, a free anti-virus from Germany. Download it at:
http://www.free-av.com/
AVG Grisoft also produce a good free anti-virus. Download it at:
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/1/lng/us/tpl/v5
Free Firewall Software:
There is also a free firewall from Zone Alarm:
You should use only one firewall at a time, and be aware it must be
set up correctly to allow both the inward and outward traffic that you want.
You could for example, inadvertently block your computer from accessing
the internet.
Relax it's no big deal
Don't get paranoid about virus attacks. They are simply an
inconvenience which can be overcome with a little patience, and best of
all, the necessary software can be obtained for free.
