The moment you arrive you realize
the Knickerbocker Mansion is a very special place.

The Knickerbocker Mansion Country Inn
is located
in the heart of Big Bear Lake, California. It nestles on two-plus acres just three blocks from the village of Big
Bear and four blocks to Big Bear Lake. The
Mansion
backs directly to the San Bernardino National Forest which offers
hiking, biking and many more outdoor activities.
The historic, rustic log, main lodge was built in 1920 by William Knickerbocker, the first Big Bear Lake Damkeeper, as a private home for
his family. It was converted to a Bed & Breakfast in the mid 1980's, and
now consists of four buildings on 2.5 acres. 11 guest rooms are located
in two of the buildings, the main lodge and a separate converted
carriage house. The Knickerbocker features nine standard bedrooms, each
with private baths and queen beds and two large luxury suites with
private baths, king beds, fire places and spa tubs. All rooms have TV's,
VCR's, private telephones. A separate conference room building is
available for private functions. The fourth building is the owners
(innkeepers) private residence.
The
Mansion
The interior of the Knickerbocker Mansion is warm, cozy and historic.
While the feeling is much more elegant than when the Knickerbocker
family lived in the house, it still has the original rustic charm and
ambiance.
The original main house had 5 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms on the second
floor. The present owners have carefully renovated these into 4 guest
rooms, keeping the original 1920 cedar wood paneling, so that each of
the present rooms have full private baths accessible from inside the
guest rooms. The 3rd floor attic has been converted to pine wood paneled
700 square foot luxury suite. Each of the four dormers offers
magnificent views. A new private exterior deck is a like a perch on top
of a tree, complete with private ground level access.
The 1st floor has a reception entrance, living room with original native
rock fireplace and 1/2 log stairway. The ceiling and much of the walls
are covered with the original wide wood paneling. The dining room also
has an original native rock fireplace and original cedar wood paneling.
A 2nd dining room converted from part of the 1st floor original exterior
verandah brings the outside inside. It is a perfect place to enjoy a
wonderful gourmet breakfast, when the weather does not permit dining on
the outside back patio.
A new full commercial kitchen is the creative workplace of Thomas,
partner and Knickerbocker executive chef. Breakfast is included each
morning in the room rate with your Knickerbocker stay. A two-course
gourmet breakfast is selected and prepared each day. We try to
accommodate your special dietary needs and ask you to advise us of any
food sensitivities or allergies. Breakfast at the Knickerbocker is
always a treat.
"Bistro
at the Mansion" is open for Saturday night dinning.
Reservations are required. We offer a Chefs menu to please the most
discriminating palet. We are the only inn in Big Bear to have a full
restaurant. Here's a quote from one of our recent guests. "the
coffee, food & music greeting us at breakfast was a delicious
combination. Could you top it? You did! Dinner on Saturday night was
'to-die-for' (& I almost did. Five courses....& we enjoyed every last
bite.!)"
