like more than one hundred years ago. Cross our threshold into another time far
removed from 21st century distractions... to savor the experience of life as
it once was: tranquil, romantic, genteel, to discover what was called "The
Tasteful Interlude" ... in true 19th century style.

History, accompanied by unobtrusive personal attention in comfort and privacy.
We invite you to discover breakfasts reminiscent of the time when dining was an
event and afternoon tea resurrecting the art of genteel conversation. Wander
down our fairy-lit footpaths through our terraced rustic gardens to restaurants,
theater, shops and events or nestle in secluded nooks by the koi pond or the
edge of the forest . . . rediscover each other and make memories to cherish in a
setting filled with nostalgic enchantment where "one night is never enough".
History
The grand four-story brick mansion, overlooking the historic Gold Rush community
from atop forested Prospect Hill, was completed in 1860, before the Civil War
began. Built for one of the city's founding families, a California State
Historic Landmark, the Williams family home is the only one of its kind in this
part of the state.
A prominent feature of Nevada City for more
than a century, the "castle" was named by the townspeople as it was being built
high upon Prospect Hill. Its Gothic Revival architecture was as rare in
California as were four story brick homes in Nevada City. The imposing Pre-Civil
War landmark was rescued from the ravages of time in 1960 to become one of the
first Historic Bed and Breakfast lodgings in California, an exact restoration
that has been recognized by The Smithsonian. Today, your hosts Conley and Mary
Louise Weaver, resident innkeepers for nineteen years, invite you to "dwell in
the past" at the Red Castle, where you will make magical memories of your own.
Rooms
Each of our guest rooms has its own special character.
The lavish interiors only hinted at by elaborate Gothic gingerbread,
are richly ornamented with sophisticated and unexpected artifacts reflecting
decades of refined collecting. Each room is artfully arranged to open a window
into the past, embracing all who enter with warmth and intimacy. Fascinating
links to the 19th century are revealed at every turn, encouraging one's eye to
explore and imagination to soar. The four story mansion offers seven guest
rooms: majestic, high ceilinged rooms with Queen-beds on the first and entry
levels; the middle level and top floor rooms are double-bed suites. All rooms
have exceptionally beautiful private baths and access to private or shared
verandas.
All rooms are
air-conditioned.
Breakfast
The innovative and imaginative breakfast menu always includes heirloom recipes
or historic culinary treats. Enjoy a five course lavish buffet that begins with
fresh orange juice, coffee and tea, followed by fresh baked breads, pastries,
muffins or scones.
Teatime at the Inn
Set aside the world outside for a few moments while the ritual of afternoon tea,
that most Victorian of traditions, takes place amid friends and acquaintances.
It is both comforting and stimulating to withdraw from the ordinary to an
elegant setting and partake of sumptuous savories and sweets displayed on
heirloom china and crystal. Treasured recipes and special beverages executed by
our chef are served from our collection of nineteenth century American silver
plate.
