Return to 18th century New England as you step through the door of this former tavern.  Built in 1731, the Bird In Hand was licensed as a tavern from 1800 to 1832.  Our sign is an exact replica of the original that now resides in the CT Historical Society Museum in Hartford.  Taverns were places for travelers to rest and refresh themselves before undertaking the remainder of their journey....we strive to continue that tradition today.

The B&B provides several common rooms. The cooking hearth is the center of attraction in the tavern room. A comfortable sitting room is furnished with all the modern conveniences such as cable TV/VCR. We have a selection of videos in our library. The enclosed porch is an inviting place to read a good book, or you may want to take a stroll around the yard and enjoy the perennial flower beds and herb garden.

A full country breakfast is served every morning, including coffee/tea, juice, fresh fruit, breads and a hot entrée. Coffee and Tea are available in the dining room for early risers.

We are located close to UConn, Mystic, Sturbridge, many antique shops, Nathan Hale Homestead, Mark Twain House and other historical house museums.
 

Guest Rooms and Rates

"Anna White Room" - $150.00 per night
Named after the wife of Daniel Rust who lived in the house from 1731 to 1748. After the rustic conditions she lived in, we thought it appropriate to name our nicest suite after her. This air conditioned room is decorated in a bird theme with a queen sized canopy bed and a working fireplace. The luxury private bath features a two person whirlpool tub, luxurious robes and a hair dryer.

"Mary Rose Room" - $125.00 per night
Named after the original innkeeper, this air conditioned room features a private bath, working fireplace and a queen sized canopy bed. A secret closet was believed to have hidden slaves traveling to freedom on the Underground Railroad.

"Dunham Room" - $90.00 per night
The old door to the room bears the name Dunham, hence our choice for a room name. This air conditioned room features twin beds and a private bath with tub/shower and hair dryer. This room is accessed by a steep, narrow staircase. If you have difficulty with stairs, please consider one of our other rooms.

"The Cottage" - $150.00 per night
The cottage is perfect for an extended stay or anyone wanting to prepare that special meal, then settle down to watch a good movie in front of the fire. The cottage offers a fully equipped kitchen, a private bath with shower and hair dryer, and a great room with fireplace, queen sized bed, TV/VCR and telephone. A ceiling fan offers summertime cooling.

All rates are based on double occupancy and are subject to CT tax. A credit card or 50% deposit is required to hold the room. Some rooms are large enough to accommodate a third person at a cost of $15.00 per night. If your plans change and you need to cancel, please notify us within 7 days. We regret that we must bill the full amount of the room if we are not notified of your cancellation .

From Hartford, CT:
I-84 East to exit 59, Route 384 to end. Route 44 into Coventry. Turn right onto Route 31 South (Main Street). Bird-In-Hand is 3 miles on the right.

From Sturbridge, MA:
1-84 West to exit 67, Left onto Route 31 South toward Coventry, to Route 44, Left on Route 44 to Route 31 South (Main Street). Bird-In-Hand is 3 miles on the right.
