Originally constructed in the 1920's as a fishing camp for
vacationing anglers trying their luck at the Eastern Shore, the two-story
building was converted into the island's first B&B and remains an historic
landmark on Tilghman Island.
Sinclair House's innkeepers, after
completing renovations and redecorating Sinclair House, reopened the Inn to
guests in early 2002. Both have lived and worked around the world. Monica, who
is from Peru, met Jake in Guinea-Bissau, West Africa where she served as an
international officer with UNICEF and he was on diplomatic assignment to the
U.S. Embassy in Bissau. During their travels
around the world, both innkeepers were avid collectors of local art and
handicrafts. Sinclair House now displays these individual treasures. Intricate
inlaid and gilded mirrors are from S.E. Asia, North Africa and South America.
The hand-carved long bench on the sun porch reflects Indonesia's long tradition
of working with native hardwoods from Java, Borneo and Sumatra. Moroccan
artisans have produced the Berber carpets,
Marrakech brassware and hand-painted
couscous serving dishes. The semi-precious stones decorating the golden face of
an Inca deity suggest its origin as the Andean highlands in Peru. Mohair
tapestries, decorative masks and Botswana hand woven baskets come from southern
Africa. Everywhere you look, something out-of-the-ordinary will catch your eye
and lead you to ask, "Now where in the world did you find that?"
Sinclair House offers four guest rooms,
each with its own private bath:
Africa Room - King Bed: Hand carved
statuary and masks, Botswana baskets, Mohair woven tapestries from Lesotho, a
framed original beaded Ndebele wedding skirt.
Indonesia Room
- Queen Bed: Indonesian light rattan furnishings, framed
silver-covered figurines from Solo, traditional puppet masks and hand painted
batik.
Morocco Room - King Bed: Hand painted bed
head-board and tables produced in the mountain village of Chechaouen, antique
mirrors and traditional decorations from Marrakech and Fez.
Peru Room - Queen Bed: Gilded and
under-glass painted mirrors from Cajamarca, textile wall hangings and "retablos"
of Andean folk scenes.
