History...
Gonzales was founded in the frontier of gentle rolling hills west of the
Colorado river in 1825 and named for the governor of the Mexican states of Coahuila and Texas.
It was the capital of the colony founded by
Impresario
Green DeWitt and brave German, Czech, & Polish immigrants. Within a year,
Comanche and Wichita Indians burned the town and killed a settler. In order to protect the citizens, the Mexican governor sent
a 6-pound cannon to Gonzales in 1831. After Santa Anna became dictator of
Mexico in 1835, he wanted the cannon back from the insurgent "Texians." Gen.
Santa Anna sent his brother an a small group of soldiers to reclaim it. The
cannon was quickly buried in a peach orchard. The next morning, 18 Gonzalians
ambushed and defeated the group of 100 dragoons on the east bank of the
Guadalupe River about 10 miles southeast of town.
The battle cry for this "first shot of the Texas
revolution" was "Come and Take IT!" A year later, Santa Anna did just that when
he returned to the Alamo with an army of thousands. Thirty-two men from Gonzales
died in the Alamo while fighting for their freedom. Gonzales was the only town
that responded to Col. Travis' frantic plea for re-enforcements. A few days
later, the only survivors, Susanna Dickinson and her infant daughter sadly
returned to their home in Gonzales.
